It’s easy watching MOTD on a Sunday morning, viewing an incident when you know the outcome to pass judgment on the Referee. Unfortunately this week Mr Jones is the man being judged. The law is clear when it comes to outside interference and that play should be restarted with a drop ball and a goal should not have been allowed. On the high angle TV view it does look quite clear, but when you see it from behind the player and the referee’s view it’s not quiet as clear first time around.
It’s clear that in law he got it wrong. However Im finding it disappointing that all the ex referee’s are coming out the wood work to slam him. When you watch the clip from his angle, tell me honestly that you can be 100% first time that the match ball came off the beach ball. First viewing it looks like the liverpool player kicks that ball. Im not saying they should come out and defend him, but it’s not quite a ball over the line scenario.

Close proximity of an outside agent (beach ball/object) to the match ball should be regarded as enough of an inteference to stop play, i.e. no contact of the match ball is required
Kicking the actual match ball in close proximity and passing close by a non-match ball/outside agent should be enough reason for the referee to stop play due to outside interference.
If a non-match ball (e.g. spare balls around the field, aslo classified as outside agents) is thrown on the park while play is on at the other end of the park, the referee is instructed by FIFA’s current interpretation to NOT stop play – it simply cannot be regarded as interference or a danger to players. A common exception is flares/broken glass on the pitch, as these are dangerous to players.
If a non-match ball/outside agent gets thrown in close proximity, say amoung players contesting for the match ball (without the outside agent touching any player or the actual match ball itself) then it should be regarded as intefering with play.

considering that a.ferguson is being rightly persued for alleging that a ref was not physically fit enough to ref a match, what action is being taken against the ref in the sunderland v liverpool game? along with his linesmen and the 4th official it would appear that none of then knew the rules!!!!!!!!!!! considering the financial implications to the clubs surely the refs association can provide staff that are conversant with the rules of the game?
