How can you have a respect campaign when you have professional referees making the mistakes they are at present? in any other line of work such incompetence would result in dismissal!! to have respect you have to earn it, and to be honest the referees we see week in week out dont deserve any respect, they are acting like headteachers!! get referees from ex-players, people who understand the game, i for one as a season ticket holder at a premiership club am sick of games being spoilt by incompetence!! sort it out as referees are getting worse and they should not be the talking point of every game!!

We need to give grass roots football the perception that it is a definate stepping stone to better football and give new referees the confidence that the 'system' is working for them. More and more we see referees courses populated by students and dads who want the qualification for cv's or just for junior football only. OK this is good for the statistics but not good for the game, so how can we encourage new officials to take their game forward.
I would be only too willing to help and discuss with you how we can develop our grass roots refereeing game and hope that more younger referees can benefit from what we all have to offer.

Thank you for listening to my passionate request.

I have just recieved the dvd 'Incident Analsis Offsides' and watched it with imense interest. It will certainly have a great effect on my Wharfedale Referees Society members when I introduce it at our next meeting. I was impresses when I saw Keith Hackett introduce 'Prozone' at Leeds Referees meeting a few seasons ago and the work he and the top flight team do to bring a supreme level of refereeing to todays football game.
However grass roots football generally consists of just one official only and 2 club linesmen who reluctantly assist in 'ins and outs' only.
There are some participants who consider this level a graveyard for the 'has beens and no hopers' rather than a stepping stone for the next level of either football players or officials. For myself I believe that every game I do is important for me to perform 100% for my vocational profession or for the younger players who may achieve greater things. So my question is simple, how do we assist this 'one official' to up his / her game to give the consistency that is seen by the top flight teams.
The dvd is fantastic for those either assisting or middle manning on contributory leagues or above, but could I ask if it would be possible for you to take a step further down to look at the game where our future top flight referees will be coming from. Even trying to get new referees to become members of local referees societies is difficult as the only benefit we an offer is our experience and the offer of a distinguished guest speaker / excellent dvd every so often.
Could it be that 'compulsory' membership of a referees society and regular documented attendance could be a contributory factor to promotion? What the PGMO could do is support the societies with more dvd's and correspondance to bring the new referees forward and the effects would then be seen by the assessors for their promotion.
I realise that this is a very difficult subject to resolve however by working from the top down and from the bottom up we could certainly raies the level of refereeing in the UK. W
